California Coastal Driving
Wow, have you ever driven up (or down) the coast of California? What an experience! If you have not experienced this amazing adventure for yourself, you must add it to your "bucket list." (you know, those things you want to do before you kick the bucket).
No matter where your point of origin or where your destination may be, a drive along the coast in California will offer varied scenery from high cliffs and big waves, to miles of flat sandy beach. There are areas to stop and gaze at the sea lions bathing in the sun, vistas with views for miles out to sea, paths to climb down to the beach below and walk through stone archways to the beach beyond, quaint little beach towns along the way for shopping and eating or people-watching.
One of our favorite beach cities along the California coast is Carmel-by-the-Sea near Monterey. What a beautiful, gorgeous, pristine place. We love Monterey too!
The best, secret beach we discovered was very well hidden . . . Driving down the 1, you'd never know this beach was here . . . from the road, it looks like any other turnout but once you get out of your car and start to approach the edge, you see that you can climb down to this heavenly beach. The turnout is just north of Laguna Road and just south of the Roadhouse restaurant in Davenport, California. Davenport is just north of Santa Cruz and just south of Half Moon Bay, both just south of San Francisco, California. Beautiful coastline! This is a secluded beach that requires you to hike down a cliff to get to. Make your way down to the beach below and you'll find a wonderful surprise . . . an archway carved in the stone that you can walk under on your way to the long beach and sea. Two great restaurants on this stretch of coastline is Cameron's Pub just south of Half Moon Bay on the 1 and The Roadhouse in Davenport, California on the 1.
California is an amazingly beautiful place. In one state you can experience everything under the sun:

Pebble Beach Golf Course (Monterey, California)
Don't forget about the Desert Cities! It's about a 2 hour jaunt from L.A. to Palm Springs and Palm Desert or Indio but it's an area you won't want to miss. You won't be driving along the coast but you'll experience the California desert at it's finest. Yes, it gets hot here, as in 115 to 125 degrees in the middle of the summer. But might you believe us if we tell you it's a "dry heat?" The many, many swimming pools in the Desert Cities will welcome you and keep you cool. We recommend visiting Palm Desert, where you can stroll down El Paseo for some fabulous California shopping. You must stop by La Quinta's quaint shopping center as well.
